What is it? It’s a sukkah, that’s what. A sukkah is the temporary shelter or booth used in the Jewish feast of Sukkot. It’s meant to symbolize the shelter God gave to the Jewish people in the wilderness after they were freed from slavery in Egypt. Sukkot this year will be observed from September 19 through September 25, and at Georgetown this year the sukkah shown above will be set out on Healy Lawn, the green space at the front of the university’s main campus. It was created by the winners of a design contest organized by SukkahCity, which situated a dozen sukkahs in Union Square in Manhattan in 2010.
